The second film that I watched this weekend was Rear Window, directed by Alfred Hitchcock. The film focuses around L.B. Jefferies who currently has a broken leg and is spending his time in a two bedroom apartment. During his time in the apartment, he watches his neighbors, from his window, go about their day. He is watches one of his neighbors and he becomes convinced that a murder has taken place. He uses an Exakta VX camera to spy on the neighbor.
I enjoyed watching this film. I’ve watched a few Alfred Hitchcock films over the past couple weeks and I’d have to say this was a pretty good one. I really like the theming of his movies and I think that they have good stories. The whole film was set in one apartment room while Jefferies looked out the window to watch his neighbors. I did a little research about how the set of this film was made and I thought it was very interesting. I’m giving this film an 8/10 for the good story and the cool set design.

Over the weekend I actually watched two movies. The first one that I watched was Halloween Kills, directed by David Gordon Green. I actually went to see this movie with a few of my friends at a drive-in. It was pretty cold but we had a good time. The film was just one of those classic Halloween movies with a serial killer on the loose. You may know him as Michael Myers.
The film really didn’t have that much of a plot. To be honest, I don’t even remember any of the character’s names. Again, it was just one of those basic horror movies that always come out around Halloween. Actually, it was more of a thriller than a horror. I wasn’t scared the whole time because you kind of already knew when he was going to pop out and kill someone. I’m giving this film a 5/10 because it had some good camera shots but the story wasn’t that great. This film wouldn’t be my first choice to recommend to someone but it was okay. This week I watched the film Before I Wake, directed by Mike Flanagan. The film focuses around a boy named Cody. Cody has the ability to make his dreams come to life when he sleeps. He is currently in the foster home of Jessie and Mark. Cody has been to other foster homes before but previous foster parents have been afraid of what he can do. Cody dreams about what he sees during the day and other parts from his life. If there's a nice memory Cody will dream about something good. If there was something bad that happened because you have a nightmare and it turns into a much worse situation.
I enjoyed watching this film but it probably isn't my favorite. I like the story and there's some pretty good jump scares but there were few parts where I was a bit confused. Overall I think the film did a good job and I really like the music score that was put with the film. It wouldn’t be my first pick for a movie but it’s not horrible. I’m going to give this movie an 8/10 and I think it's a good film to recommend to someone else. Over the weekend I watched the film Greyhound, directed by Aaron Schneider. The film follows U.S. Navy Cmdr. Ernest Krause, played by Tom Hanks, as he is assigned to lead an Allied convoy across the Atlantic during World War II. They have to navigate through the Atlantic as they make it through German U-boats. This is Krause's first wartime mission and he ends up in the middle of the longest, largest and most complex naval battle in history.
I really enjoyed watching this film. It was filled with ongoing action and there were not really any slow parts to the film. I really enjoyed the story and I was even able to learn a little bit about the actual battle. This film had great cinematography, story and music score. There were parts of the film where the U-boats came up from under water and the music felt a bit unsettling like they were chasing the convoys. I'm giving this film a 10/10 and I would definitely recommend watching it. Over the weekend, I watched Cruella. The film was directed by Craig Gillespie and it stars Emma Stone. The film is all about the well known Disney villain, Cruella de Vil, from 101 Dalmatians. It tells her backstory and how she became to be who she is now. The film shows how Estella, Cruella's real name, got into fashion and how she met Horace and Jasper. Estella works her way up and eventually gets a job working for a top fashion designer, Baroness Von Hellman. As the film progresses, Cruella realizes all of the horrible things that Baroness has done. The film shows all of the clever ways Cruella uses to get her revenge on Baroness.
I really enjoyed watching this film. I didn't really know what I was expecting going into this but I was definitely impressed. I'm glad I decided to watch it. I didn't really think I needed Cruella's backstory but jeez was it intense. The film had great cinematography, especially in the beginning of the film when it shows Cruella working at her first job. It was an impressive tracking shot. The film had good acting and I loved the costumes. One of my favorite parts of the film was the killer soundtrack. They picked some good songs. The film ended up having a big twist closer towards the end which I was not expecting. I'm giving this film a 10/10 and I would definitely recommend watching it. Over the weekend, I watched The Book of Henry, directed by Colin Trevorrow. The film follows two boys, Henry Carpenter and Peter Carpenter, who are bothers. Henry is a gifted boy and is very smart. He does many of the more adult things for the house rather than his mom. He helps pay the bills and we even see him buy stocks at one point. They live next to a young girl who is Henry's age. Her name is Christina Sickleman. She is a nice but quiet girl. During the beginning of the film, Henry learns a terrible truth about what is happening at Christina's house between her and her stepfather. During the course of the film, we see Henry try to come up with a plan to help Christina. It's hard plan to come up with because Christina's stepfather is the chief of police and it's hard to turn him in. Later, Henry is unable to continue with his plan and he then passes it on to his mom. His mother uses the clues and and other helpful resources that Henry left behind for her.
I really enjoyed watching this film. I heard about the film a while ago but I never got around to watching it. I'm glad I came across it on Netflix. It was so much sadder than I thought it was going to be. To be honest, I cried a little bit. The film is filled with good acting, a nice soundtrack, well-shot scenes and beautiful scenery. There were a few points in the film where I felt like the story was a bit off though. But, for the most part, it has a great story and it's filled with many different emotions. I give this film a 9/10 and I would definitely recommend watching it. Over the weekend I watched the film The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. This film was a bit of a change for me because it's much older and it's a silent film. It is a German expressionism film and it's German name is Das Cabinat des Dr. Caligar. The film is about a man, Francis, who remembers is experiences with his fiancée. Francis and his friend, Alan, visit The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. This is an exhibit where the mysterious doctor shows the somnambulist, Cesare. Alan wants to ask Cesare about his future. The next day, Alan is found dead. Francis suspects Cesare of killing Alan. The whole film follows the suspicion that Cesare is a killer and the mental break down of Francis trying to figure out these mysteries.
This film was definitely much harder to watch considering there was no talking and it was much older. I was a bit confused while watching the film but I eventually started to understand. Many German expression films remind me of Tim Burton films. They both have darker lighting, interesting character styles, and a much different set than what you would see in other types of films. I will give this film a 7/10. It was hard to understand it first and it was a bit slow. But, for the year it was made, it was actually pretty good. Over the weekend I watched Stand By Me, directed by Rob Reiner. The film follows four boys, Gordie Lachance, Chris Chambers, Vern Tessio, and Teddy Duchamp. The boys are on a quest to find a the missing dead body of a boy who was hit by a train. The film starts off with three of the boys playing a card game in their tree house during the summer of 1959. Then suddenly Vern comes to the treehouse to tell the others what he heard about the dead body. The boys all agree to go on a journey to find the body. During their quest, they encounter many different problems. All of them forgot to bring food, they hideout in a junk yard but then get caught, and they almost get hit by a train themselves. And there are many other problems along the way. But, the good part about their journey was the connection that the boys made.
The film was based off of the novella, The Body, by Stephen King. I enjoyed this film and the story was very good. The story is told by an older Gordie Lachance, the main character, as he remembers his journey he had as a kid. The film is a comedy yet it still has a few sad parts to it. It's kind of similar to the film The Sandlot. I give Stand By Me an 8/10 for it's good characters, cool shots and great soundtrack. Over the weekend I watched the movie Hidden Figures, directed by Theodore Melfi. The film focusses around three African American women who work for NASA in the 1960s. Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson are brilliant mathematicians who work the calculations for the space program. They work in the West Area Computing division where they are "computers." This means that they do all of the math by hand. The three women are working on one of the greatest operations in the history of the United States. They work to launch astronaut John Glenn into orbit. One of the women, Dorthy Vaughan, is told that the Space Task Group needs a new computer that can do analytic geometry. Dorthy gives Katherine Johnson the job because she knows analytic geometry and is good with numbers. Another one of the women, Mary Jackson, wants to be an engineer and she is encouraged to apply for a more senior engineering position. But she doesn't have the right qualifications for it and she needs to take classes at a high school for the engineering qualification. Dorthy Vaughan wants to be promoted to supervisor because she has been working as one for a while. The film shows the struggles and accomplishments for the Black women during this time in the space program.
I really enjoyed this film because it was based on a true story and it shows the amount of work that these women went through during this time. It shows the segregation of Black women working and I think that it's a very good representation. I'll give this film a 10/10 for it's great story, cinematography, costumes, and acting. Taraji P. Henson, who played Katherine Johnson, was my personal favorite performance. I definitely recommend watching this film. Jojo Rabbit, directed by Taika Waititi, follows the story of a ten year old German boy who is in the Hitler Youth during WWII. Johannes Betzler, JoJo, has Adolf Hitler as his imaginary friend. Jojo is under the care of his mother, Rosie, while is father is off fighting in Italy. During his normal life and the time that is spent at a Nazi youth camp, Jojo has a hatred for the Jewish people. One day at camp, Jojo gets an injury from a grenade and is sent back home to recover. His mother leaves for the day and Jojo is home alone. While at home, he hears a noise coming from the upstairs of his house. Jojo goes to see what the noise is and he finds that there is a Jewish girl hiding in the wall in one of the rooms. The girl, Elsa, tells Jojo that he can't tell anyone about her because that would get him and his mother in trouble. Throughout the film, Jojo learns more about Jewish people from information that Elsa has given him. Later, he finds out that his mother is the one who has been hiding Elsa in their home to keep her safe.
I really enjoyed this movie. It's a comedy yet it still shows an important message and a deep truth behind it all. It shows that so many people were fed false information by following other people instead of listening to themselves. The film is filled with amazing cinematography, great writing and a beautiful music score. There is also foreshadowing throughout the film. While you are watching it, make sure to pay attention to the shoes that Rosie is wearing. I give this film a 10/10 and I would definitely recommend it to someone who hasn't seen it. |
